To get to Lefkada, you don't need to take a boat. Instead you go by car or bus, quickly crossing over the narrow channel separating the coast of Aitolokarnania and the island. It is said that once upon a time Lefkas was united with mainland Greece. Some say the Leleges, its first inhabitants, transformed it into an island; others maintain that the Corinthians dug a trench across the isthums. Lefkas is a mountainous island, covered with dense vegetation to the east and south. Its eastern coast slopes gently down to the sea, which is sheltered from the wind and dotted with thickly wooded islets. The most famous of these are Skorpios, Madouri and Sparti. In contrast, the west coast is steep, with a few spectacular stretches of endless golden beach. The capital of the island is also called Lefkada. A tranquil, picturesque town built on a natural harbour, it is composed of distinctive, multicoloured wooden houses, whose upper floors are covered with sheet metal. It is from here you 'll set off-over good  roads - to explore the island. These can be purchased or simply admired in the village of Karya in the northern part of the island. And when you are climbing the steep, winding paths leading up into the hills, which are occasionally veiled in cloud and where even the smallest piece of fertile land is a treasure for the islanders, don't forget to visit the mountain village of Eglouvi. Here they grow lentils of a high quality and to celebrate the end of the harvest the villagers hold traditional celebrations. The history, gradual development and all other events, which over thousands of years influenced the growth and current face of Lefkada, whether it was the rule of the Venetians, Turks, French, Russians, English or archeological finds from Achaean and Minoan cultures, can all be seen in the Archeological museum in the island's capital. It creates the dilemma of what to do next year: whether to continue discovering new islands or whether to return to the welcoming embrace of Lefkada. Because Lefkada is a place which one should not miss on one's travels and what's more, it's addictive.  The city is surrounded by a pier where a variety of boats and yachts are moored. At present the largest and most modern marina in Greece is built here. The drawbridge, medieval fortress of San Mauro, the lighthouse, stone piers with the beautiful Ammoglossa beach and from the other side the long sandy Gyra beach with its typical windmills. This, however, is by no means all that hospitable Lefkada will enchant you with. And should you happen to lose your way during your wanderings on the island, it will be no misfortune as you can discover entirely new sights and views, new places for swimming, watch the islanders doing their work etc. Lefkada is special in that it satisfies a wide range of visitors, including those who do not wish to bathe.
