Limnos Island | Area:476 sq. km. Population 15,721, Capital Myrina (Kastro). By air from Athens, Thessaloniki, Mytilini; by ship from Piraeus, Kavala, Euboea, Agios Konstantinos, Mytilini, the Cyclades, Dodecanese,Crete. The Thracians were the first to settle on the island in Neolithic times; by the Bronze Age a prosperous civilization had emerged. By the 5th century Limnos had fallen under Athenian influence, and was subsequently governed by the Macedonians and Romans. In later years it belonged to Byzantium, Venice and the Ottoman Empire, being united with Greece in 1912. |
